This special lesbian double bill celebrating Pride month sees two women in two very different time periods thrown into intense circumstances that test both body and soul! Director: Paul Verhoeven. French with subtitles. Rated 18 for sexual violence, strong sex, nudity, bloody violence. ★★★★ “Delicious, visceral provocation… a tale of lust, lies and religious fervour” - Little White Lies From renowned provocateur Paul Verhoeven (Elle, Basic Instinct), BENEDETTA is a subversive erotic drama based on the true story of a 17th century nun entangled in a forbidden lesbian affair. Virginie Efira stars as the titular Benedetta, a nun whose religious fervor begins to manifest in increasingly sensual and violent visions of Jesus. These hallucinations arouse the suspicions of Charlotte Rampling’s shrewd abbess, Sister Felicita, whose distrust grows when a farm girl called Bartolomea (Daphné Patakia) enters the convent seeking refuge, and quickly develops an attraction to Benedetta. Premiering at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, Verhoeven’s intoxicating latest is a transgressive and alluring look at faith, power and religion, and is every bit as scandalous as you would expect from the controversial filmmaker. Swan Song (Pride Month Chiswick Cinema)
29 June 2022, 19:30:00
Bar 6:30pm - Film 8:30pm (15% Off all food and drink) The swan song (Ancient Greek: κύκνειον ᾆσμα; Latin: carmen cygni) is a metaphorical phrase for a final gesture, effort, or performance given just before death or retirement. The phrase refers to an ancient belief that swans sing a beautiful song just before their death since they have been silent (or alternatively not so musical) for most of their lifetime. The belief, whose basis has been long debated, had become proverbial in ancient Greece by the 3rd century BC and was reiterated many times in later Western poetry and art. Swans learn a variety of sounds throughout their life time. Their sounds are more distinguishing during courting rituals and not correlated with death.
